Deriv Only Ups / Only Downs bots: every tick has to agree

6 min de lecture

Only Ups and Only Downs are Deriv contracts on a run of ticks. Only Ups pays if every tick after the entry is higher than the one before it. Only Downs pays if every tick is lower. A single tick the wrong way, or a tick that repeats the price before it, ends the contract without a payout. Because every tick has to agree, they pay far more than Rise / Fall: a 2 tick Only Ups paid 3.82 USD on a 1 USD stake when we checked. This guide covers how the contracts settle, what each length pays, and the Only Ups / Only Downs bots you can run free on BinaryTick.

How Only Ups and Only Downs settle

Deriv's own wording for a 2 tick Only Ups on Volatility 100 is: "Win payout if Volatility 100 Index rises successively for 2 ticks after the entry spot."

Here is a real run of Volatility 100 ticks. The price rose three ticks in a row, 673.71, 673.76, 673.84 and 673.87. This is how a 2 tick Only Ups bought next would have settled:

TickPriceAgainst the tick before
Entry673.91
1674.00higher
2674.12higher

Both ticks rose, so the contract pays.

Here is the same setup at another point in those ticks: 672.91, 673.02, 673.20 and 673.42, three rises, then a 2 tick Only Ups:

TickPriceAgainst the tick before
Entry673.40
1673.45higher
2673.27lower

Tick 2 fell, so the contract loses. Only the ticks after the entry count. It did not matter that the entry, 673.40, came in below the run before it.

A repeated price also loses. Deriv's rules say there is no payout "if any tick falls or is equal to any of the previous ticks". That does happen: in 1,000 ticks of Volatility 100 that we pulled, 24 repeated the price of the tick before them. When a tick breaks the run, the contract ends there rather than running on.

What each length pays

Deriv sells Only Ups / Only Downs from 2 to 5 ticks. Each extra tick is one more tick that has to agree, and the payout roughly doubles. Deriv's quotes for a 1 USD stake on Volatility 100:

DurationOnly Ups or Only Downs pays
2 ticks3.82 USD
3 ticks7.63 USD
4 ticks15.27 USD
5 ticks30.53 USD

The 2 and 3 tick quotes were the same on Volatility 10, 25 and 75 and on the 1s indices.

Deriv offers Only Ups / Only Downs on every Volatility index, the standard ones and the 1s versions. It does not offer them on the Jump, Step, Crash, Boom, Range Break or Bull / Bear indices.

The Only Ups / Only Downs bots on BinaryTick

BinaryTick has 3 Only Ups / Only Downs bots, all free, on the Only Ups / Only Downs page. All three ship on Volatility 100 with a 2 tick contract. Each explains its rule under How it works on its card, and every number it uses is under Settings.

  • Only Ups Runner counts ticks in a row. After 3 rises it buys Only Ups, and after 3 falls Only Downs, backing the run to carry on for two more ticks. Both counts go back to zero after every contract, so it waits for a fresh run rather than buying the tail of the last one. It is in the Quick entries group.
  • Trend Run needs a shorter run, 2 ticks, but only takes it when the trend agrees: the newest tick has to sit above a 30-tick EMA, a moving average that gives the newest ticks the most weight, for Only Ups, or below it for Only Downs. A run against that average is skipped. It is also in the Quick entries group.
  • Run Reversal trades the other way. It reads RSI, a 0 to 100 score of how one-sided the recent ticks have been. At 72 or above it buys Only Downs, and at 28 or below Only Ups, backing the push to reverse. It is in the Longer scans group.

The two run bots wait for the market to show a run before they join it. For how RSI is worked out, see the RSI strategy guide.

The settings that matter

Duration (ticks). From 2 to 5, 2 by default. Each extra tick roughly doubles the payout and adds one more tick that has to move the right way, as the table above shows.

Required run length. On Only Ups Runner, how many ticks in a row it waits for, 3 by default. A shorter run trades more often; a longer one waits for a stronger move. On Trend Run the setting is Required run, 2 by default, alongside a Trend period of 30 ticks for the average.

Overbought level and Oversold level. On Run Reversal, 72 and 28, with a 14-tick RSI period. Its card's pace note says it: "Move the overbought and oversold levels towards 50 to trade more often."

Cooldown after a loss (ticks). After a losing contract, the bot sits out this many ticks before it looks again: 2 on Only Ups Runner and Trend Run, 3 on Run Reversal.

Martingale. All three ship with a 2.1x martingale and a 5 USD max stake. The ladder runs 1, 2.1, then 4.41 USD before the max stake sends it back to 1 USD. An Only Ups win pays several times the stake, so a win anywhere on the ladder more than repays the run before it: at 4.41 USD on a 2 tick contract, Deriv paid 16.83 USD, a profit of 12.42 USD against the 3.10 USD lost on the two trades before it. Untick Use martingale for a flat stake.

Max losses in a row, stop loss and take profit. The bots stop after 4 losses in a row by default, and once the session is 10 USD down or 10 USD up. The stop loss is checked after each trade, so a session close to it can place one more trade at up to 4.41 USD. Set the limits to amounts that suit your balance before you run. The stop loss and take profit guide covers each one.

Only Ups or Rise?

Rise asks whether the last tick finishes above the entry, and pays 1.95 USD on a 1 USD stake. Only Ups asks whether every tick on the way was higher than the one before, and pays 3.82 USD over 2 ticks. A market that rises, dips and rises again can win Rise and lose Only Ups. If your read is only about where the price ends up, see the Rise / Fall bots guide.

Run one now

Open the Only Ups / Only Downs bots and run one on your demo balance first. Only Ups Runner is a good place to start: its rule is easy to follow on the chart, three ticks one way and then a 2 tick contract the same way. Then try a 3 tick Duration (ticks) and see how the 7.63 USD payout changes your session.
